Check out the Coroflot 2007 salary survey here. Then check out Catherine Mulbrandon's "How Much Do You Earn" to compare design with other professions and the rest of the country. Then ask yourself how much facetime a mega-bigtime CEO who makes $100,000,000 a year will give a fancy design+innovation strategist who makes $100,000 a year. Ultimately, compensation is about accountability (designers have no accountability in the business world, really - think about it), and I honestly think the ratio reflects reality in terms of whose ass hangs out more in the business world. (The ratio is 1000:1 in this humble not-at-all-inflated example, heh).
